Atlas Works
Youth Training Facility Refurbishment at Atlas Works for Nacro
Year
2025
Details
This recent project transformed existing ground and first floor spaces at Atlas Works into a modern youth training facility. We were delighted to work on this refurbishment, commissioned by Nacro, and designed to support skill development, creative learning, and personal growth for young people in the community.
The aim was to create a safe and inspiring environment which could be flexible enough to accommodate a variety of training programmes. By working closely with Nacro, we delivered a space that balances functionality, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal, for youth education and engagement.
The Brief
Nacro’s brief was to upgrade and restructure the existing ground and first floor of Atlas Works to establish dedicated youth training facilities. The project focused on improving capacity, creating specialist learning spaces, and ensuring the environment was inclusive and youth-friendly.
Key requirements included:
- Converting existing spaces into flexible classrooms and workshops
- Installing specialist learning areas, including a state-of-the-art kitchen and practical workshops
- Redecorating the facility to create a bright, welcoming, and inspiring atmosphere
- Building a new framework around the entrance atrium to improve visibility, usability, and branding
- Supporting safe and accessible movement throughout the building
The brief emphasised that the refurbishment should deliver a facility that is practical for learning while being engaging and motivating for young people.
Our Approach
Space Conversion and Layout Optimisation
The first stage of the project involved a detailed assessment of the existing ground and first floor layouts. We worked with Nacro to reconfigure the spaces, creating open classrooms to increase capacity and provide a variety of training options.
Structural adjustments were made to ensure the new layout was flexible, allowing rooms to be used for multiple purposes and adapted as needs evolve.
Specialist Learning Spaces
A key element of the refurbishment was to create specialist learning areas. Our team installed a state-of-the-art kitchen for practical culinary training and dedicated workshop spaces for hands-on learning. All fittings, finishes, and layouts were carefully considered to support effective learning experiences.
Redecoration and Inspirational Design
To make the facility more youth-focused, the redecoration programme across both floors, used colour, lighting, and finishes designed to create a welcoming and energetic environment. Walls, ceilings, and floors were treated with durable materials suitable for high-use areas, while branding elements helped reinforce the facility’s identity.
Entrance Atrium Framework
As part of the upgrade, a new framework was built around the entrance atrium. This improved visibility for visitors and provided a functional space for staff and students to gather.
The atrium now acts as a focal point for the facility, providing an accessible and welcoming first impression as you enter the building.
