2025
Details
M2 Construction successfully completed essential restoration works at the historic Spode 1G site for Stoke-on-Trent City Council. The council’s wider regeneration initiative aimed to protect and revitalise the city’s industrial heritage.
The Spode site holds cultural and historical significance and is a key part of Stoke-on-Trent’s global reputation in ceramics. M2 Construction was required to carry out a sensitive restoration that would breathe new life into the 150-year-old structure.
The focus of the project was on restoring the original roof lanterns, conserving the historic fabric through traditional materials and craftsmanship, and ensuring the building was brought back into sustainable and practical use for the community.
The Brief
The council required us to deliver a programme of restoration works designed to stabilise and enhance one of the key buildings within the historic Spode complex. The main objectives were:
- To restore the building’s roof lanterns, maintaining their original design and materials where possible.
- To complete the works using traditional conservation techniques, protecting the building’s authenticity.
- To ensure all upgrades were sympathetic to the site’s heritage status while also meeting modern standards of functionality and safety.
The brief also included preparation for the building to host a major international pottery event, which would bring together local artisans and global visitors to celebrate the ceramics industry.
Our Approach
Preserving History through Skilled Conservation
We understand what working on a heritage building requires, and our approach was guided by collaboration with conservation specialists and the local authority. We ensured that every stage of the work aligned with approved heritage standards.
The team began by surveying and assessing the condition of the structure, with particular focus on the roof lanterns. These key architectural features were carefully restored to match the original design.
Where new materials were required, they were selected to complement the building’s existing elements and provide long-term durability.
Traditional Techniques for Lasting Results
As part of the restoration our skilled team used lime plastering, a traditional method well-suited to heritage properties. This ensured that repairs blended seamlessly with the original finishes.
Modern Functionality with Sensitivity
M2 Construction integrated electrical systems and lighting discreetly, ensuring that the upgraded infrastructure supported the building’s new use without compromising its historic appearance.
Every installation was completed with precision, keeping visual impact to a minimum while ensuring the space could meet contemporary requirements for safety, accessibility, and performance.
